Individual Therapy
Also known as psychotherapy, talk therapy, or counseling-- individual therapy is a collaborative, dynamic process that encourages self-awareness, personal growth, and the development of healthy strategies to achieve goals and navigate difficult situations. The caring clinicians at Potomac Therapy Group offer individual psychotherapy for adults, children, and teenagers. We help high-achievers find their center. On this page, you can learn more about what to expect, the benefits of therapy, and how to get started working with our clinicians.
What to Expect During Therapy
Individual therapy provides support as a client processes feelings, confronts challenges in life, learns new strategies for coping and skills for navigating emotions, increases acceptance and positivity, and improves feelings of emotional well-being.
For adults, we provide caring support and gentle curiosity as clients explore mood difficulties, discuss life circumstances, process feelings, consider interpersonal patterns, personal narrative, and life satisfaction. Individual therapy offers a safe place to discuss your true feelings and desires and develop new strategies to cope with anything life sends your way.
With teenagers and older children, we also address emotional and behavioral difficulties, social pressures, self-esteem, school concerns, self-awareness, relationships, family dynamics, and life transitions. In this very important work with young adults, we use compassion and humor. We understand that emotional support during these highly formative early years positively influences a young person’s future.
With younger children, play therapy is used. Play therapy can look like we’re just playing games or having fun, but it’s actually a research-supported approach to therapy that has proven effective in helping children who are struggling with a variety of concerns. We ask younger children to use toys or play games. As they do, the therapist will talk with and observe them to gain a deeper understanding of how the child is functioning, screen for developmental concerns, and help the child comfortably communicate their feelings and concerns.
